Sammy H.

Greetings, my name is Sammy, I’m 13 years old and I am studying in American Community School of Abu Dhabi. I'm Arab American, my mom is Palestinian and my Dad is Syrian but I was born in New Jersey, America. I also feel very fortunate that I live in a place (Abu Dhabi) that will be hosting the opening of a Louvre. In art class I am currently working on a Masterpiece Copy in Acrylic Paint. Essentially, in this unit I copied (with acrylic paint) a masterpiece from any artist of my choice. An artist that inspires me a lot is Vincent van Gogh and his famous artwork like The Starry Night. I really like drawing, especially drawing portraits. When I’m talking about drawing, here is a drawing I made of a famous rapper and comedic actor called Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino.

  1. Hi! I'm Iris from Xiamen International School. I really like your drawing because there is such a strong expression on this person's face. I don't really know the person you're trying to draw, but I can feel he is very horrified and surprised. The right side of his face seems squished, the eyes that are opened very big, and the shape of the mouth all contributes to the surprised feeling.

  2. Hi Sammy! I really liked your drawing, and I think you are very talented for a 13 year old. This strongly represents Childish Gambino. I can see that you made it look like he was surprised and you did very well. As Anne said, the right side of the face is pretty squished but otherwise it looks really good!

  3. Hi there, I'm Elliot from UWC in Singapore. I found this piece interesting because the drawing and the expression on his face are both very raw and natural. I can't decide whether he is sacred, shocked or captivated but whatever he is feeling is very strong.

  5. Whoa, your drawing is superb!! I am really fascinated with your shading skill, and the way you captured the expression on his face is eye-catching... I hope I see more artwork from you in the future.

  6. Hi Sammy, I'm Eric from UWC in Singapore. I was scrolling though the page and I was really impressed with your drawing. I really like it because it reminds me of one of my friends in the past. It looks really original and has its own kind of style to it! I was a bit puzzled why his face was squished on the right side but I do think that it adds a certain effect to it.

    1. Hi, Eric! The reason as to why the face is squished is because in the photo I was copying, the mans face was covered by a shadow, as he was in a dark room. Thanks!

    2. Hi Sammy, I see what you mean with the photo, and I think it looks very good! Me and some buddies are building a glider and it would be cool if you could give us some cool ideas for the emblem we are going paint on it. You can find me on facebook or we can connect over skype/google. Thanks, great work and I hope to hear from you soon!

  7. Hi Sammy, I'm Mira from UWC Singapore. I found that this piece of work really stood out to me because of the style in which you drew it - it is very unique. I love the way you have shaded the face - and the expression is strong. The face has been drawn very accurately.

  8. Hey this Antonio, and I'm cooler than crystal (the person below me). I really like several things about this portrait. There first being that I like how the background swirls around the subject making him stick out. I also like how the part of the face in shadow disappears into the background of the drawing. I also really like the shading done on the part of the face that in the light, especially around the mouth and nose. I think that to make the portrait even better you could blend the dark side of his face a bit more into the light side.

  9. Hi Sammy, I'm Crystal and my eye was really attracted to this piece as soon as I saw it. I really like how you made the face features really well drawn and detailed. I also like how you kept it black and white and the shading is really good! Why did you choose to draw this?

    1. Hey Crystal, thanks for the pleasant comment! I decided to draw this because the man is someone that I listen too. He is a rapper, and I love to listen too the music he makes. What kind of song artists do you listen to?

  13. Hey Sammy, there are lots of things that I like about this art piece. Firstly, I really like the detail on the piece that you put to make it look like a human head. Second I really like how you used the shading for the art piece. Thirdly I like how you used the shading and details to make his expression and face stick out more to the viewers.
