Alicia and Kaitlin’s Plaster Sculpture

Hi! My name is Kaitlin, and this is my plaster project in progress with Alicia. We started our 3D Art projects and we were given an option of 4 medias to work with; plaster, trash, clay and wire. I chose plaster, and found out I had a similar idea to Alicia. Our original idea was to fill balloons with plaster, and mold the balloons into different shapes, so when we take off the balloon we are left with a plaster sculpture in the shape of the molded balloon. We got our inspiration from this website: http://www.firstpalette.com/Craft_themes/Colors/plasterfreeformsculpture/plasterfreeformsculpture.html

There were some complications, and it didn’t work out because the balloons didn’t mold as easily as we originally thought. So, what we decided to do was to make a scene out of un-molded balloons filled with plaster. We plan to paint them a variety of colors, and draw faces on them to make them look like adorable plaster creatures. We are almost done our project, we just need to put them on a base. Here’s a picture of the plaster eggs look like out of the balloon mold, and after they were painted and drawn on. If you any suggestions for us, feel free to comment - we’d really appreciate some feedback!

  1. The pieces came out looking good, you have done a good job. The use of colour is great, and the creatures really do look adorable! How did you come up with turning them into these little guys? I hope to see more good pieces of work from you. Good luck!

    1. Hey! To come up with turing them into these little guys, we did a lot of brainstorming. 1st we were going to make them into a sculpture, but then we thought we did not have enough plaster eggs to make them into a sculpture. So we thought some more on what we could do with them, and then Kaitlin came up with the idea to make them into little animals. We ran it by some of our classmates and they all agreed it was a good idea and that the project would be really cool. Thanks so much!

  2. Hey, this is a very cool idea, I would have never thought of this. These almost remind me of easter eggs, did you gather any inspiration from that? The original concept sounds like a pottery technique we studied in 6th grade (Lost Wax from Ancient India). This was a great recovery and turned out great, almost seems better than the original idea. What did you learn from this plaster experience?

    1. Hey, from this plaster experience, I have learnt that sometimes when you try things, it doesn't work and you need to improvise and think on your feet. Our original project did not work, and we had to work quickly to turn it around. I got inspiration for the coloring from easter eggs for making them bright colored, and the shape was just the way the balloons turned out when we filled them with plaster.

  4. Hey, this is a very creative idea. I really love all the different colors and the small faces on the balloons. What do you think you are going to do with the balloons now? GREAT WORK!

  5. Hey Alicia and Kaitlin! I am Kelly Kim from Xiamen International School (borrowed my friend's account for now). I really love the idea of using plaster inside of the balloons and making interesting shapes. The colors look nice and their face expressions are so cute as well. Just one suggestion (it's okay if you don't like it), but I think it might be a bit more interesting if you add the settings (?) such as maybe the beach or anything. But so far I really love this artwork!
    Good luck:)

    1. Wow I think thats a great idea! I wish we had know it sooner. We ran out of time to finish our project, and we put it on the black background as soon as we could. I think that would have been really cute though. Thanks so much for your suggestion. :)

  6. Hi Kaitlin and Alicia. I'm Crystal. I simply loved your artwork. I think your idea is very creative and I've never thought of putting plaster inside a balloon. The colors that you've painted on the plaster are brilliant and the facial expressions on each of them are all so adorable. To give you a little suggestion, you should add something around the base. Like make it look like a park or a school or something like that.
